In 1875 the Parish Church of St John the Baptist underwent major restoration. The Church was closed on 28 December 1874 and reopened in July 1875 [Thanet Guardian, January 2 and July 10, 1875]. The work involved removal of the old box pews and the galleries running along the side of the church. This stereocard shows the interior of the church before restoration. The gallery on the left hand side can be seen, together with the central box pews and the rows of candelabra used to light the church. On the right hand pillar is a poster, of which just the following is readable: 'St. Johns Church, Visitors'. The view is contrasted with a photograph of the interior in 1893, after the restoration. |

The Clifton Baths 1870 |
|||
South Eastern Gazette. 7 March 1870. The Clifton Baths – These old-established baths are now, by the enterprise of our fellow- townsman, Mr. T. D. Reeve, undergoing a thorough transformation. For many years their external appearance has not been of a character calculated to give much pleasure to our visitors, nor to act as a recommendation to bestow patronage on their proprietor; but now under the direction of Mr. Reeve, they are being made more presentable, and, when completed, will be an attractive feature in that part of Margate. The entire cost of the alteration is estimated at,£10,000. Only a portion of the work — enough to permit of the bathing being carried on in the season on a somewhat larger scale than before — will be completed this year. In addition to the above-named alterations, the roadway in front of Ethelbert terrace will be widened, the present boundary wall of the Clifton Baths estate will be removed, and a new wall will be erected — this work being carried out by the Town-council. Thus an improvement of some magnitude will be effected, mainly in consequence of the enterprise of one individual. |

Bobbin about to the fiddle - a familly rehersal of quadrille dancing, or Polishing for a trip to Margate. 1817 |
|||
Bobbin about to the fiddle. Hand-coloured etching Published by Thomas Tegg. Print made by Charles Williams May 1817 A dancing-master, playing a small fiddle, dances, facing a stout cit who dances between wife and daughter, holding their hands; another grown-up daughter dances opposite them beside the dancing-master. The cit’s leg is extended stiffly. The first daughter says: “Law Pa that’s just as when you was drilling for the Whitechaple Volunteers— only look how Ma and I & sister Clementina does it? —” Pa: “I say Mounseer Caper! don’t I come it prime? Ecod I shall cut a Figor!!” The man answers: “Vere vell Sar, Ver Vell you vil danse a merveille vere soon!” On the left a tiny child imitates her father’s step, supported by a little sister, while three rather older children dance in a ring. A plainly dressed maiden aunt sits in an armchair (right). A handsomely furnished drawing-room is suggested. |
