Watercolours of Margate added to the Watercolours section |
Watercolours by John Nixon [ca 1750 - 1818] |
John Nixon was an amateur artist best known for his humorous sketches. He was a wealthy merchant, and regularly visited Bath and Margate, whose characters and scenes he recorded in his drawings. He was a friend of Thomas Rowlandson, whose influence can be seen in his work. |

Margate's Triumphal Arches |
On special occasions Margate would decorate its streets with arches, festoons, flags and banners. These decorations are shown in a number of CDVs and Stereocards, but most are undated with no titles. However, the events celebrated can sometimes be identified from contemporary newspaper reports. On the two occasions illustrated below, in May 1865 and May 1875, the special event was a procession of the East Kent Mounted Rifles on their arrival in Margate for a summer encampment. Newspaper reports of these visits can be read here. |
May 1865 |
An archway was built across the High Street from The Prince of Wales Tavern to the ironmongers shop of D. and W. Bentley. [Left picture] A view down the High Street looking towards Queen Street. This stereoview shows, on the left, a garden wall, then Boxtree House, and then the Princes of Wales Tavern where the arch was built. On the right are a series of shops and then the shop of D. and W. Bentley (see the 1872 OS Map). [Middle picture] A CDV showing a view very similar to that in the Stereoview. [Right picture] A CDV showing a view up the High Street from the junction with Queen Street. The Elephant Hotel is on the right. |
Another archway was built across the High Street from the junction with New Street (where Woolworths was later built) to the King's Head on the opposite side of the road. These two views are looking up the High Street from the junction with New Street. The previous archway can be seen in the background. The junction with New Street is on the left and the Kings Head Inn is on the right. The right hand view shows the archway being decorated. |
A less elaborate archway was built at the bottom end of the High Street. In this view down the High Street looking towards the harbour, The Globe Tavern and Prebble's bathing rooms are on the left. |
May 1875 |
For the 1875 celebrations an archway in the Gothic style was built across Upper Marine Terrace, from the Elephant Hotel. This view is from the junction with High Street, looking down Upper Marine Terrace towards the sands, with the Elephant Hotel on the left. Some of the decorations for these celebrations might also have been used at the celebrations for the opening of the Deaf and Dumb Asylum later that year. |
The lower end of the High Street, from the Elephant Hotel to near the Parade, was decorated with festoons crossing and re-crossing the street. This is a view looking down the High Street towards the Droit House and harbour, with Queen Street on the right. |
Marine Terrace was decorated with Venetian masts and banners, as shown in this CDV, which also shows, in the foreground, the vehicle of H. Goodman, the photographer. |

On Friday 27th October 1882 a major fire destroyed the Royal Hotel Assembly rooms and neighbouring buildings in Cecil Square. The event is described in detail in Thanet's Victorian Fire Brigades by Robert Varnham [Polly's Publishing, 2010]. |
